Description

This presentation will discuss options and best practices for a department of transportation to advance autonomous vehicle strategies within its jurisdiction. Concepts to be presented are organizational structure options, legal aspects, skillsets of specialized staff, establishing internal/external public and private industry partnerships, application scope development as well as many other topics. In addition, multi-jurisdiction and multi-state coordination considerations as well as industry expectations of connected roadway capabilities will be discussed.

Dr. Raj Bridgelall program director of the NDSU Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute (UGPTI) Center for Surface Mobility Applications & Real-time Simulation environments (SMARTSe). As a technology executive and product innovator, he has more than 140 patents issued or pending in the areas of advanced sensing, wireless communications, mobile computing, and decision support platforms, including their applications in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). He has published dozens of peer-reviewed articles and is among the Google Scholar top 10 NDSU faculty cited. Prior to 2004, he served as a Chief Technologist at Motorola Corporation where he pioneered optoelectronic and radio frequency identification technologies for high-speed object and image recognition. Subsequently, he led two sensor network companies as Vice President of Engineering and as Chief Technology Officer to create under defense contracts, energy harvesting smart rocks, smart dust, and other discreet technologies for transportation, port, and border security applications. Raj is currently faculty with the NDSU College of Business Transportation Logistics and Finance Department where he teaches ITS Solutions and Transportation Systems Security.
