Description

The new permissible exposure level for workers exposed to silica is 50 mg per cubic meter over an 8-hour period. As an example, if silica dust is visible in the field, this new standard is likely exceeded. This presentation would help large and small organizations plan for, implement and comply with the new workplace standard. Topics covered: what is silica different shapes and forms, what is respirable crystalline silica, ISO testing, potential health standards, Permissible Exposer Levels (PEL), required training for employees, key elements of a respiratory control program, etc.

On September 23, 2017, OSHA began enforcing their respirable crystalline silica standard for the construction industry. The standard established a new exposure of 50 micrograms per cubic meter for an 8-hr time weighted average along with a host of other ancillary provisions such as establishing a written exposure control plan, housekeeping requirements, and medical surveillance. This standard calls for one of two methods of compliance. Either testing atmosphere and coming up with a control measure or following OSHA’s Table 1. Aside from the actual silica standard, an employer may fall into the respirator standard in order to comply. This video conference is intended to address key components of both silica standard and respirator standard.
